The Revolution’s Impact on American Society

Those fateful shots fired on the fields of Lexington and Concord on April 19th, 1775 marked the birth of true American liberty. From this moment on, the arduous journey of securing and extending freedom to all began, a journey not yet completed. Liberty for the colonists was not won on the battlefield, nor was it gained when ink marked parchment; instead, the dawn of true freedom for America came from a fundamental shift of values and desires deep within the fabric of society. The American Revolution, from 1775 to 1787, was not only a triumph of guns on the battlefield, but also a triumph of social, economic, and political values, fundamental societal changes, which gave birth to liberalism in the New World.

The colonists prior to The Revolution enjoyed a nearly unprecedented amount of freedom: their society as a whole had much greater freedom of press, assembly, and speech than in Europe, and their colonial institutions provided for a relatively high degree of religious tolerance, educational opportunity, and economic egalitarianism. Some argue, that the opportunities afforded to colonists rendered their revolt unjustified. However, American Revolutionaries called for a unique type of liberty which they felt themselves entitled: they desired both individual freedom and civic freedom, both freedom from the laws and freedom to arbitrate over those laws. To them, as English politician Algernon Sidney exclaims, liberty, “consists in an independency up the will of another,” not just a citizen’s capacity to pursue his own desires. Therefore, the Colonists argued, the very existence of the King George III as an external legislative force, regardless of his actions and regardless of the Colonists’ personal freedom, meant that Americans were enslaved and denied their natural liberty, and meant that they were justified in their revolt. The most important and fundamental shift in American society, therefore, was the pure freedom gained through self-government and the absence of despotism; the social, economic, and political shifts within this time period reflected this unique liberty, and gave birth to American liberalism, the duality between individual freedom and freedom of self-rule.

On the surface, this newly enjoyed freedom ushered in dramatic social changes. For example, the Pennsylvania Packet in 1779 (Document B) professed Revolutionary ideological fervor, calling on all colonists to, “Instantly banish every Tory from among you. Let America be sacred alone to freemen.” In fact, ostracism and persecution led to the exodus of more than 80,000 loyalists, helping to dissolve the conservative, aristocratic elite within colonial society, and helping to give rise to personal liberty. As is often the case with revolution, emboldened by these victories, some colonists extended the concept of personal liberty to near anarchy. In 1787, Abigail Adams (Document G) remarked, that “Ignorant, restless desperados, without conscience or principles, have led a deluded multitude to follow their standard, under pretense or grievances which have had no existence but in their imaginations.”

Despite this, the social effects of the American Revolution, as a whole, resulted from the imbuement of revolutionary ideals of social egalitarianism and democracy within society. Social democracy flourished as values fundamental to liberalism pervaded society: most states lowered their property holding requirements for voting, eradicated any traces of European inheritance laws by banning primogeniture, and allowed for the formation of strong artisan and laborer trade organizations. Additionally, just as the colonists feared the despotism of George the III, they also grew weary of the intimacy between Church and State. Fearing this concentration of power, progressive thinker Thomas Jefferson pushed for the separation of the government from the major colonial religious institutions, a separation which, since the Revolution, has helped to define Western libertarianism and liberalism for centuries. Empowering the citizens with freedom of worship in his Statutes at Large or Virginia passed in 1789 (Document D), he wrote that, “no man shall be compelled to frequent or support any religious worship, place, or ministry whatsoever…but that all men shall be free to profess, by argument to maintain, their opinion in matters of religion.” In fact, social democracy had such momentum that in 1787, the Pennsylvanian Northwest Ordinance (Document H), arguably the most important piece of legislation passed by the Continental Congress, established the first organized United States’ territory around the Great Lakes as one free from slavery or involuntary servitude (except in the case of punishment).

However, an important question emerges: why, at the birth of Continental liberalism, did these social changes not come into their logic fruition? Why was the abolition of slavery, for example, not complete? Why was social equality not extended to all? The answer, unfortunately, was that, despite the ideological fervor of the Revolution, social idealism was fragile in the face of economic and political desires. Fearing the factious split of colonial forces, Revolutionaries compromised their ideals for political strength. Just as the rights of slaves were not then secured, the rights of women and Indians were almost wholly ignored. Valedictorian of the Young Ladies Academy of Philadelphia in 1792, Molly Wallace (Document J) remarked about women’s rights, “No one will pretend to deny, that [women] should be taught to read in the best manner. And if to read, why not to speak?” Throughout The Revolution and beyond, women were largely restricted from enjoying the same political equality as land owning males. Likewise, the rights of Indians were ignored, and in 1786, the United Indian Nations (Document E) asserted their disappointment about the insincerity of liberal idealism, stating “It is now three years since peace was made between the King of Great Britain and [the colonies], but we, the Indians, were disappointed, finding ourselves not included in that peace.” Just as the Revolution gave birth to social liberalism, it also started a legacy of stinging hypocrisy which has remained a force within America to the present day.

Interestingly, while many of the social changes within the period of 1775 to 1787, broadly speaking, represented a shift towards personal liberty and equality (protection from the institutions of power), many of the political and economic changes of the time represented the colonist’s new capacity to rule over those institutions of power. For example, in 1776, the Continental Congress called on each colony to draft their own constitutions, with the sovereignty resting with the people, as in accordance with the theory of republicanism. John Adams termed this, “the most important resolution that was ever taken in America,” (Stahr 60) no doubt because the colonies were asserting their civic freedom to rule over themselves by affirming their ideological convictions. One of the most striking embodiments of the duality of liberalism, freedom from and freedom to rule over the government, was found in James Madison’s Federalist Paper in 1788 (Document I), representing a fundamental political change based on the belief that, “In framing a government which is to be administered by men over men, the great difficulty lies in this: you must first enable the government to control the governed; and in the next place oblige it control itself.” Most fundamentally, free from the burden of an external English legislative force, the colonists had the power to determine their own political destiny—this is the most essential illumination of the civic freedom which Americans hold dear.

The birth of liberalism, however, did not extend merely to social and political institutions, but to economic institutions as well. Colonial society demanded both freedom from the institutions of power, and freedom to rule over them, with economics as no exception. The Revolutionary Era forced economic autonomy upon the colonists, forcing them to both determine how to manufacture their own raw materials and to find new non-English commercial venues. Economically, the colonies needed to mature from mercantilist infancy to economic self-determination and sufficiency. In fact, according to Document F, in 1789, the promotion of agriculture was awarded with a medal of achievement; this represented the importance colonists place on economic independence and self sufficiency.

This economic change, coupled with both social and political development, underscored the progress of the Revolution. Progress, in that era, should not, through a historical lens, be only quantified only by military triumph, but also by fundamental cultural victories and what we can now perceive as the dawn of societal liberalism. The ideals espoused by the Revolutionaries, though often practiced only half-heartedly, set an important precedent for modern political, social, and economic institutions. The most profound impact the American Revolution had on American society, from 1775 to 1787, was birth of liberalism: both a preservation of English civil liberty and a claim for political liberty. These values, deeply entrenched within American society, manifested themselves within the constitution, the federal and state government, and worked to define the American identity for centuries to come.

I am a Nigerian who is an American at heart. Even though I have never applied for an American Visa and I have never been to America, I am often mistaken for an American by American Liberals and the so called Left-Wingers in the Blogosphere.

I have been employed under the USAID and worked for the Johns Hopkins University's Population Communication Services(JHU/PCS) for years and also worked for other American public health NGOs on projects in Nigeria.

I appreciate your essential documentation of the evolution of American Democracy.

God bless.

I think what you posted made a lot of sense. But, what about this?
suppose you were to create a killer post title? I mean, I don't want to tell you how to run your website, but what if you added a headline that grabbed people's attention?
I mean "The Revolution's Impact on American Society" is a little plain.
You might peek at Yahoo's front page and see how they create post headlines to grab people to click. You might add a related video or a pic or two to grab people excited about what you've got to
say. Just my opinion, it might make your posts a little bit more interesting.
